In 2006, I had the privilege of witnessing my parents achieve a significant milestone by purchasing their first home—an incredible accomplishment as immigrants. The joy of this achievement, however, was short-lived. The 2008 economic downturn hit hard, leading to the unfortunate consequence of my parents losing their jobs and struggling to keep up with mortgage payments. The looming threat of foreclosure notices cast a dark shadow over our family, and at that challenging time, we were unaware of the various options available to us.
